The End... for a little while

Suburban Fasionista was created with the view to examine, explore and elaborate on the way fashion mixes with technology.

Through the compilation of this blog, it has become apparent to me that there are a lot of links to be made between fashion and technology.

Fashion blogging, particularly that which relies on photography, is the future of current print fashion magazines.

As was discussed in one of my blogs, print magazines are becoming increasingly influenced by the internet and the personalities that use it.

There are so many cross-overs between these two mediums now: previously web-exclusive bloggers are now magazine columnists and all the major fashion magazines now have a presence online.

Another side of the fashion and technology relationship that I have covered, is the way the internet has allowed people to see outside their own community.

When you live in a regional or rural community it is hard to stay inspired to have fun with your style.

By bringing random people from Sweden to random people in Maitland, NSW, technology facilitates this fashion inspiration.

The third area of fashion and technology that I've covered is the way fashion is actively using technology in its promotion and production.

Technology has allowed for new and often better fashion product as well as new and better ways to promote and sell it.

Engaging in a blog has had two main benefits for me:
  1. I want to work in fashion magazines and I see blogging playing a major part in the future of these publications.
  2. I have learnt a lot about the different links between fashion and technology.

I will be continuing this blog, or similar, following the marking process.

To Elf or Not to Elf...

Although I know you can't believe everything you read on the internet, this is downright unusual and a little creepy if it's actually true...

Modern Plastic Surgery is flogging a ground-breaking procedure that promises to increase music enjoyment and create the illusion of a more attractive face.

How?

Elf ears.

Yep, you read right; elf ears are the bee's knees.

According to the site, all the cool kids are doing it (!) and "Faun-Clubs" are allegedly springing up everywhere.

Faun-Clubs are exclusive dance parties for the pointy-eared.

A Hungarian plastic surgeon, Dr Lajos Nagy, created the plastic surgery.

He has been practicing in New York but is set to return to his homeland to further the "trend" there.

"Make your hearing perfect! Accentuate your personality! Be amongst the first music fauns in Europe!"

If it's this popular and cool, where are all these new-age elves?

Not in Vogue.

Not in Russh.

Not on Gala Darling.

Not on SandyCandy.

My advice?

Don't get the elf ears: they look bloody ridiculous.

You're a thief! But my, your teeth are lovely!

Suburban Fashionista isn't usually the place for crime reporting, but I think this American case is an amusing exception.

Altamonte Springs' police are looking to speak to at least two tattooed, white males in their 20s who were involved in the robbery of a pharmacy.

Yes, they do sound scary... Until you find out what they actually stole:

$800 worth of electric toothbrushes and Crest teeth whitening strips.

According to reports, the Crest products contain no chemicals that are used to make illicit substances.

It appears the men just wanted movie star teeth!

If you're going to be in downtown Altamonte Springs in the next few weeks, you might want to keep a very close eye on your Colgate.

It's not just celebrities that need to make sure their teeth are sparkling - a life of crime is tough on teeth!

And through the wonders of technology, you can view the raw surveillance footage from the pharmacy.

It's worth checking out... If not just to see idiots with shopping baskets full of toothbrushes running to their getaway van!

Ouch!!

Some people go through a lot of pain to look cool.

Waxing, corsetry, too small shoes, too high shoes, too tight tops, piercings...

In this case, all I have to say is...

OUCH!

It looks really uncomfortable champ.

Cool, but uncomfortable.

He's another one of Sandy's stylish mates... Damn those cool Swedes!

SandyPandyCandy... Really?

Don't get me wrong, I love my friends, but how come my favourite livejournal girl has such a cool posse?

Are Sandy from Sweden's friends all so cool just because she only takes photos of them when they look their coolest?

Or are they all just really, really, stylishly awesome?

Like is this dude always so fun?

Or does he kick around on the weekend in his track-pants and ugg boots without any hair product?

That's the wonder of style and the internet.

You can be whoever you want to be: all it takes is a camera angle, a hair style, a hat or some eyeliner and you can be a completely different person.

If you're feeling stuck wherever you are, log in and upload a new you.

Turn yourself into some super cool kid from France or something.

Play dress ups and be who you would be if you could be.

Inspire yourself.

Cut & Paste

Per month, I accumulate between six and ten magazines.

Thus, every six months or so, I throw out up to sixty magazines.

That's a lot of paper, I know.

So this morning, I was quite excited to read Gala Darling's blog about what to do with all the magazines you buy.

The crux of her advice:

"Don’t be afraid to tear up your old magazines, or to keep the best pages & scrap the rest."

Here's the plan for my next day off, as per Gala's advice:
  • Create a fashion 'lookbook' - a scrapbook of things you like... whether that be pictures of shoes, make up ideas or even design elements of the magazine.
  • Frame your favourite covers/pages - I actually considered doing this with the October issue of Vogue... Gemma Ward in crazy bright Spring fashion! I think I will now...
  • Make envelopes or do origami - fairly self explanatory! I think this would be an awesome idea to send out your Christmas cards in handmade envelopes...
  • Donate them - Gala suggests giving your magazines to Doctor's surgeries or women's refuges. It's a lovely idea. I think some op-shops would probably take them too if they're in good condition.

Cheers to Gala for yet again blogging about something so obvious you couldn't have thought of it yourself!

I really love the idea of a lookbook.

I think i'll make one for fashion inspiration and one for design inspiration.

It's a shame you can't Ctrl-X and Ctrl-V in the real world!

I'm off to find some scissors and glue.

I Love Lenko!

While the credit card is still hot from your spin around STYD, here's another excuse to spend.

Lenko has to be one of the funnest labels around!

I've been to her awesome boutique in Melbourne where I bought a most loved top with this print on the front:

Oh the hilarity!

This beauty is all sold out now but there's some corkers still up for the taking.

There's also crazy handmade toys and the super popular range of Chip Chop bags.

I'm loving this metallic jacket, the plush death guitar and all of the bags!

If you get the chance to hit Melbourne, definitely check out her crazy store.

In the meantime though, the website will turn that frown upside down!

And Lenko gear is fun without being too weird for the locals or for hanging out with Nan.

Shop Til You Drop... Online!

Every stylish girl's favourite shopping magazine now has a super exciting online presence.

The Shop Til You Drop website is exactly what you'd expect from the ACP -owned magazine:
  • Colourful
  • Informative
  • Dangerously Inspirational

The website is pretty much the same as the magazine but with that one dangerous difference...

In the magazine, if you see something you love, you have to go to the shop where it was advertised, then try it on, then hand over the dollars.

Online though, if you see something you love, just press go and it's yours!

As well as online shopping facilities, the site also has regular blogs from half the staff.

The eboutique is going to be my downfall...

Definitely worth checking out!

Make Your Eyes 'Stronger'... Kanye-style

Kanye West, cool dude that knows it, is loving the space-age chic right now...

If only every musician had this much money to throw at their video clips!!

Since the release of this song, Kanye's style has been super space-age.

The Venetian-blind style glasses he rocks in this clip are awesome.

He had them on at the MTV Music Video Awards - you might have missed him if you fainted during Britney's performance.

I don't know how easy they'd be to see out of - maybe not the best style to wear whilst driving (or walking for that matter).

Photo from here.

Apparently they're fine for autographing though (especially when your mate looks as silly as you do!).

If you want to be as cool as Kanye, hit eBay for a pair... Or just find some fun white framed sunnies like these awesome Le Specs ones I've got...
